Why would anyone want to be mayor?
That's a good question, one I have asked over the many years I have lived in Wilmot township.
Now, I have found a good answer to that question.
I am a candidate for mayor of Wilmot because I believe in Wilmot.
I believe our township is a great place to live. I believe in the communities that make up this municipality, from the hamlets like Shingletown and Punkeydoodle's Corners, to the villages like New Dundee, Mannheim, Petersburg and St. Agatha, to Baden and New Hamburg.
I believe these communities are the heart of Wilmot, and that someone has to stand up for their unique individuality.
The official name for each of these locales is 'settlement area.' But we know our towns and villages and countryside by another name. We call them 'home.'
Over the next few years, our home will face a number of challenges, and a few outright threats.
I¹ve been deeply involved in the efforts to prevent the Ministry of Transportation from destroying access to New Hamburg, and the battle over changes to Highway 7&8 continues.
I want to see community input into our parks and community centres put back into place.
I will be sure we provide key services for our neighbours who are seniors, young people and families in need.
I will work to provide a positive environment for our businesses, small and large.
I will seek a permanent solution to the Nith River flooding that prevents vibrant commercial growth and threatens homes and families.
Wilmot is financially healthy; I will not let our township get back into a financial hole.
Your mayor is also your sole representative on other important governing bodies: Waterloo Regional Council, Grand River Conservation Authority, and Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro. I promise accountability and two-way communication on all the many issues involving these bodies, from regional roads, policing and health services, to environmental issues.
Please contact me about these, or any other, issues.
I ask for your support on municipal election day, October 25, 2010. |
