Mark Murray: A History of Service
Mark, 48, is a lifelong resident of New Hamburg and has worked in his family-owned business, Murray’s Clothing & Footwear, since 1980. He is the third generation to be involved in the business since it was founded in 1952. He is now the owner and manager.
As well as being a dedicated family man, Mark believes in serving the community. His volunteer work includes setting up the Christmas street lights and flower baskets to enhance the downtown business core. He is also an active member of the New Hamburg Board of Trade.
Mark is perhaps best known for his work with the local fire department, on which he has served for the past 28 years. He has held various positions including Senior Captain and, most recently, District Fire Chief, the latter since 1997.
Mark’s family heritage and business experience gives him a unique view of New Hamburg, which he would bring to bear as a councillor. The next council of Wilmot Township will be new and inexperienced, so his unparalleled background and skills will be important for understanding the town’s historic development and in planning its future.
Running a prominent local business, Mark demonstrates a level-headed approach to finances and, as the current District Fire Chief, also makes use of his leadership abilities. He believes that Council needs to focus on maintaining and developing the downtown business core as this will benefit the whole of New Hamburg.
The affordability of minor sports in New Hamburg is one of his concerns, so Mark is keen to keep sports fees in check.
